Earlier this year we covered a particularly novel 3D printer add-on called ColorPod. Developed by Netherlands-based Aad van der Geest, ColorPod is a useful add-on to any RepRap style of 3D printer that allows it to print in full color using a combination of powder-based 3D printing and more traditional color inkjet cartridges. Its use in the food industry continues to grow, allowing for customization across a number of categories. 3D printing of confectionery has focused primarily on chocolate and hard sugar candy, tut recent innovations have led to printing of gummy candy. In the US, retailer Dylan’s Candy Bar is offering in-store 3D printing, providing consumers with over 100 designs for candy that can be made in five minutes.

Focusing on natural foods and funded to the tune of 40,000 euros (Bt1.6 million) by the crowd funding platform Kickstarter, Print2Taste’s machine, the Bocusini, is the world’s first plug & play 3D food printer and will cost in the region of 900 euros.
